LEE JOHNSON
About Lee
Lee Johnson is a half-Korean and half-Caucasian ex-cellist turned writer from Honolulu, Hawai’i. She often cat-fishes folks into thinking they’re about to meet a 40-year-old ex-NFL star with a severely generic name like that. But on brand with cat-fishing, being mixed race adds a uniquely tricky dimension to identity. Most people hit puberty and ask, ‘Who am I?’ Mixed kids hit puberty and ask, ‘Who am I today, in this room, with these people, in this tone? Optics aside though, Lee proves to be a subpar Korean by being a failed musician and hates tapioca pearls. On the other hand, she’s never been to a tailgate party and she dislikes Michael Bublé. Her desire to belong in both cultures has been the breeding ground for the heartfelt comedies she writes. Lee’s mission is to dismantle the idea of "Asian excellence" as a standard to live up to, showing that it's okay to fail, to question, and to just be. Through her comedies, she invites others to join her in celebrating the weird, the broken, and the human. After all, it's the imperfect moments and the unpredictable friendships that make life worth living.
In 2022, in collaboration with creator and showrunner Zahir McGhee (“Harlem’s Kitchen,” “Scandal”), Lee co-wrote and produced the finale of ABC’s ‘Queens,’ a hip-hop drama starring Brandy Norwood and Eve. Most recently, she was a 2023 Paramount Writers Mentoring Program finalist, a 2024 Disney Entertainment Television Writing Program finalist, and a 2024 ‘Ohina Filmmaker Labs Fellow. Before writing, Lee worked for several years as an Assistant Prop Master & On Set Prop Assistant on shows like Netflix’s “Everything Sucks,” NBC’s “Grimm,” and HBO’s “Here and Now.” She credits her time in the Art Department for enabling her to craft compelling visual stories. When not writing, Lee can be found on the tennis courts hating on pickle ball, playing cello at home, building oversized charcuterie boards or traveling solo across the world.
