LEE JOHNSON

About Lee

Lee Johnson is a half-Korean and half-Caucasian TV writer from Honolulu, Hawai’i. She often cat-fishes folks into thinking they’re about to meet a 40-year-old ex-NFL star with a severely generic name like that. But on brand with cat-fishing, being mixed race has this ironic consequence of not truly being able to belong and appease either community… which unfortunately starts with what we look like. Growing up, Lee had a whole other glamorous life as an “exotic, ethnically ambiguous” and egotistical child model to then becoming a chunky middle schooler who did not meet her Asian mother’s beauty standards. In Korean culture, body shaming is a way of showing love and Lee was (and is still) smothered by it every single day. Optics aside, Lee proves to be a subpar Korean by being a failed cellist and hates tapioca pearls. On the other hand, she’s never been to a tailgate party and she dislikes Michael Bublé. Her desire to belong in both cultures has been the breeding ground for the heartfelt comedies she writes, and she is passionate about telling stories about identity, home, and dysfunctional friendships and families.

In 2022, in collaboration with creator and showrunner Zahir McGhee (“Harlem’s Kitchen,” “Scandal”), Lee co-wrote and produced the finale of ABC’s ‘Queens,’ a hip-hop drama starring Brandy Norwood and Eve. Most recently, she was a 2023 Paramount Writers Mentoring Program finalist and a 2024 Disney Entertainment Television Writing Program finalist. Before writing, Lee worked for several years as an Assistant Prop Master & On Set Prop Assistant on shows like Netflix’s “Everything Sucks,” NBC’s “Grimm,” and HBO’s “Here and Now.” She credits her time in the Art Department for enabling her to craft compelling visual stories. When not writing, Lee can be found on the tennis courts hating on pickle ball, playing cello at home, building oversized charcuterie boards or traveling solo across the world.
